Kombucha is a beverage rich in bioactive components, including polyphenols and glucuronic acid. Its potential health benefits arise from the synergistic effects of these components, especially when produced under sterile conditions.
Consumption of kombucha may help protect against cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) due to its polyphenol content, which inhibits low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation, regulates cholesterol metabolism, and promotes smooth muscle relaxation to help prevent high blood pressure.
Glucuronic acid (GlcUA) aids in liver detoxification and elimination of waste, potentially enhancing liver function. However, the concentration of active components can vary based on the symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) and preparation methods.
Further controlled research is needed to assess health effects in humans, as some contraindications have been reported.
